Ostensibly liberal yet humiliating a male by addressing him as a female since you differ with him (believing that being female puts you at a lower pedestal) (Faisal Qureshi), putting on suicide vests as an actor and explosives all over your body because you are a “Musalman” geared to hit the “enemies” of Islam (Shaan Shahid) and using foul language and issuing fatwas against others only because of difference in opinion (Hamza Abbasi) is the new face of patriotism in this ill-fated country.
As if the deep-state sponsored media was not doing enough, these show-biz persons have joined in to play their role for that would win them accolades in a country where extremely few are prepared to listen to any voice of rationality while the visible and the invisible hands would be there to pat them at the back.
So if you can use extremely cheap and vulgar language against a stereotype “enemy” (as defined by the establishment), can declare someone a traitor for differing with the “establishment’s views”, be poignant and emotional in your articulation, promoting hate, jingoistic and prepared for violence (read jehad), you are a true patriot.
And if you talk of reconciliation, peace, friendship, love and reject violence as a means to achieve your objectives, you are either a coward or maybe a traitor but never a patriot.
This phenomenon is not new to our psyche where we have almost eliminated all narratives other than the one propagated by the “state.” Our media is either completely sold out or has been coerced into toeing the “official line.” We begin the systematic brainwashing indoctrinating hate to our youth right from the primary level which continues up to post-graduation. Teachers are more interested in “shaping the character” of their students and teaching “true Islam” than imparting knowledge. Judges are giving out judgments based on Islam and morality rather than law and justice. Hence, characters like Faisal Qureshi, Shaan Shahid and Hamza Ali Abbasi themselves are a product of the system they aim to strengthen.
Meanwhile, countless characters like Orya Maqbool Jan, Ansar Abbasi, Amir Liaqat and their ilk are there to promote a culture of hate. Then we find several hawkish retired generals and bureaucrats who occupy primetime on TV talk shows making fiery claims and propagating hate. Hence, the entire nation is being bombarded with consistent narrative of hate and violence. Where are we heading? Can we ever have peace and tranquility in this country? Is it necessary to hate India, Israel and America to be a patriot?
And let us not forget that hatred has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet. And let us also not forget that hatred is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die.
